Vegan Tempeh "Bacon"

If you follow me on instagram you'll probably have seen me making this vegan tempeh "bacon", with me promising to post a recipe for it - well I've finally written it up (and taken the fancy photos) so without further ado, here is my super easy recipe for Vegan Tempeh "Bacon"!

Vegan Tempeh "Bacon"

I had seen recipes for vegan "bacon" floating around on Pinterest and Instagram and knew I needed to have a go at making my own. This recipe was the second time I had made it myself. The first time I didn't really measure ingredients I just mixed a variety of things together and it just happened to work! Well this time I decided to note the amounts of what ingredients I was using, still just using my initiative to make up the recipe but making notes 😉

Depending on your taste preferences you could definitely add more or less chilli/ paprika. This is definitely a very versatile recipe, so feel free to adapt it as you see fit, this is just how I liked it!

I'll admit I also let the tempeh fry until burnt patches were beginning to appear, this is again just how I liked it as I felt it gave an authentic smoky "bacon" taste. However if you don't want burnt bits on your tempeh just fry for less time, until the tempeh has began to crisp up on both sides.

Vegan Tempeh "Bacon"
I enjoyed my tempeh bacon in a sandwich with tomatoes and avocado, but you could enjoy it with a vegan fry up (I'm thinking tofu scramble, mushrooms, beans, hash browns mmm) or on a salad, on a pizza or anything you can think of! This may not be a super healthy recipe, but I can promise you it's healthier than traditional "meaty" bacon so definitely a winner!

P.S. What is your opinion on vegans calling things "bacon", "cheese" and "milk"? Do you think it's right that we use these names or should they be kept for the traditional animal derived products?

Vegan Tempeh "Bacon"

Total time: 15 Minutes
Yield: 3-4 Portions
Ingredients
  • 200g Tempeh
  • 50ml Olive Oil
  • 50ml Liquid Smoke*
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sriracha Hot Sauce (or chilli powder)
  • 1 Tsp Maple Syrup
  • 1 Tsp Paprika
  • 1 Tsp Cumin
Cooking Directions
  1. Begin by slicing your tempeh into thin slices, as thin as you can without it breaking.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix all the other ingredients together.
  3. Place pieces of the tempeh into your sauce mix for a few minutes each, coating each side well.
  4. Heat up a non-stick frying pan on a medium-low heat.
  5. Fry your tempeh (as much as you can fit in the pan without pieces touching) for approx. 2 minutes on each side, until the pieces are burning a little (this is fine, it just adds to the flavour!).
  6. Repeat this process until you have fried all your tempeh.
  7. Enjoy on it's own, in a sandwich like I did, on a salad, anything you fancy!
* I found my liquid smoke in the 'American Food' section in Tesco's (UK), but there's plenty available online for those of you who can't locate it in your local grocery store!
