Vegan Spicy BBQ Cauliflower "Wings"

I seem to have been seeing vegan cauliflower wings everywhere at the moment, and it was some sort of sign saying to me that I need to try them! You may have seen my review of the Grumpy Panda Diner in Newcastle upon Tyne, where I got to sample my first cauliflower wings, and they were delicious! In addition to this, my work friend brought in her own cauliflower wings (check our her blog) and I just knew I had to have my own go at making them! Cauliflower is actually something I flat out refuse to eat, just because I find it so boring! But I promise you, with this sauce you won't find cauliflower boring anymore!! (No offence if you like cauliflower as it, it's just my personal opinion!).

So, the evening after I sampled my friends cauliflower wings I went to Sainsbury's, picked up a unhappily small cauliflower and some BBQ sauce and went home to make my own "wings". On this occasion I just eye-balled the amounts used, and completely made up the recipe with a little guidance from my friend, just mixing plain flour with milk and water to make batter, then making a BBQ hot sauce mixture. Somehow, they turned out great!! My dedicated Omni brother gave them 8.5/10, saying they were the best vegan thing he had ever tasted and requested I make them again! So, that weekend I went and purchased a much larger cauliflower and set about making some more.

This is a recipe that is pretty foolproof, you only need to make a flour batter, bake, then mix in sauce. There's nowhere you can go wrong really! (Apart from maybe adding a little too much hot sauce than you intended you!). The process of coating the wings in the flour batter is a little messy I'll be honest with you... I started off thinking I could just use a fork to dip them in the batter but it soon became apparent this would take too long and I just used my hands to dip them in, a messier, but much quicker alternative. You can opt to use as much or as little hot sauce as you want, I just found this was the amount that I preferred personally. You could also add mixed herbs, paprika, chilli flakes, this is just a basic recipe that you're welcome to change to suit you!

Cauliflower has a wide range of benefits, such as reducing inflammation, containing a high amount of mineral and vitamins as well as being a source of protein. I really enjoyed these cauliflower wings and am thankful that I've finally found a way to incorporate them into my diet!

Vegan Spicy BBQ Cauliflower "Wings"

Total time: 1 Hour 45 Minutes
Yield: Roughly 20 Pieces
Ingredients
  • Roughly 1kg Cauliflower (Raw)
  • 50g Plain Flour
  • 90ml Dairy Free Milk
  • 45ml Cold Water
  • 1 tbsp Cumin
  • 225ml BBQ Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Sriracha
Cooking Directions
  1. Begin by cutting your cauliflower into pieces. In my opinion it's better to cut it up into smaller pieces rather than big ones, as it's easier to eat, but do whatever you feel is right!
  2. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius, and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. To prepare the batter, mix together the plain flour, dairy free milk and water until smooth. Take your cauliflower and dip in the batter, coating it, then transfer to the baking tray.
  4. Bake the cauliflower for 30 minutes, turning once mid-baking.
  5. To prepare the spicy BBQ sauce, mix together the BBQ sauce, sriracha and cumin in a bowl until fully combined. Take your batter coated cauliflower and dip each piece in the sauce mix.
  6. Bake the sauce coated cauliflower for 45 minutes, or until crispy.
